Active and Wellbeing Week 2019

We held our annual Active and Wellbeing Week from the 21st to the 25th of January last. This year’s theme was Addressing the Gender Gap in Teenage Fitness. Inspired by our own research in school, encouraged by the initiative 20×20 If She Can’t See It She Can’t Be It and supported by South Dublin County Council Sports Development, we embarked on a week of activity with all of our students participating.

Sixth Year students took time out of their busy study schedule to get involved in a HIIT class in our very own Sports Complex. Exercise aids study as regular exercise changes the brain to improve memory and thinking skills. Exercise benefits the brain as much as the body and that’s always a good deal for students.

Fifth Years, Transition Year and Leaving Certificate Applied students walked from Bray to Greystones as their activity. Weather conditions were cool and a little damp but there is no such thing as bad weather, only the wrong clothes and all students persevered to the end of their challenge.

Junior students enjoyed a hike up Ticknock as their challenge and enjoyed the fresh clear air high above the city. This is one of Dublin’s most popular climbs for good reason. The views over Dublin and the Irish Sea are stunning.

We encourage our students to continue being active as the weather improves and the days are longer. The benefits of young people being active are many. Young people who exercise are more likely to keep exercising as an adult. Exercise helps young people to achieve and maintain a healthy body weight. Regular physical activity helps build and maintain strong, healthy muscles, bones and joints. Pics
