TCS Launches Satellite in CanSat Programme

CanSat is a European Space Agency competition for 2nd Level Students (Transition Year and upwards) run by ESERO Ireland in association with CIT Blackrock Castle Observatory and Institutes of Technology and supported by funding from Science Foundation Ireland. On Friday 29th March 2019 Technological University Dublin – Tallaght Campus held a local competition for the CanSat project. In the CanSat competition, teams of school students compete to design, build and test a mini-satellite or CanSat. The project involves programming, sensors and communications technology, design and development of the parachute for satellite recovery and the mechanical design of the subsystems that fit into a single drink can.

Students from Tallaght Community School won the competition on the Technological University Dublin – Tallaght Campus winning a range of sensors to help them develop their CanSat further.

Ian Boran a teacher from Tallaght Community School mentored a team including; Robyn Murphy, Davis Phillips, David Adesoye, Danny Farrell, Anthony Karpovs and Abdulkarim Nassar Al Harthy.

The technical team supporting the school was made up of staff from The Technological University Dublin – Tallaght Campus including: Paul Dillon, Michael Byrne, David Maguire and Gerard Ryder. Funding for the competition day was supplied by the School of Engineering, Technological University Dublin – Tallaght Campus.Launch support was provided by Alan Giltinan from Blackrock Castle Observatory in Cork.

The principal industrial judge this year was Ed Duffy from Nines PV a company developing a novel volume manufacturing process for solar PV cells. Pics
