On the 10th of March, myself and some other 6th year students took part in a workshop about opportunities from taking up a trade. The workshop was facilitated by Irish Rail and on that day we made our own way to the Irish rail training center in Inchicore. When we got there we were brought into the training center by someone that was part of the Irish rail team. We were all given work boots and a hi-vis. After that, we went into the electrical part of the warehouse where the team brought us through what was going on in the electrical circuits and told us about the electrical apprenticeships Irish rail offer. It was really interesting to learn about the different career opportunities. We were given tasks like bending wiring poles and fitting a socket. Next was the mechanical apprenticeship. We were again told what this apprenticeship consists of and we also got to change a car wheel. Our last one was welding. In this one we got to weld metal together. We also got the chance to hear about and mechanical engineering apprenticeship for Dublin bus too. Overall I really enjoyed this day and would recommend anyone interested in apprenticeship to go on this day if they get the chance.- Jake Fallon
