Graduate 2012

My name is Laura Walsh and I graduated from Tallaght Community School in 2012. Since leaving, I’ve pursued wholeheartedly my love and passion for music, receiving my degree in music from BIMM in 2012, and a masters in Music Therapy in 2019. Perhaps the strangest part of my journey is that I didn’t actually do music as a subject in school! But what I did get from the school was unconditional support and encouragement, particularly from my year head. “Be happy when your alarm clock goes off in the morning” was his famous piece of advice when it came to picking our career. I chose music as my number one option on the CAO application form the day before it was due in. I couldn’t have done that without the belief and support I received from the school and my family.

Because of music, I’ve gotten to play in the Olympia, hear a song I wrote on national radio, play gigs in different countries. Because of music therapy, I’ve had the pleasure of working in a rehabilitation team and special needs schools. I’ve centred a career around something that I love. There is not a day that goes by that I’m not thankful that I chose to switch my number one choice on that CAO form, and how grateful I feel to the people who supported me to do that. The greatest skill or knowledge I gained from my time in TCS was that how successful your career is depends entirely on how happy it makes you.
