Gaisce is a self-development challenge for young people between the ages of 15-25 and is an award that comes from the President of Ireland. Here in TCS, students are given the opportunity to take part in the Gaisce award during Transition Year.
Students take part in the challenge by committing themselves to community involvement, a personal skill and physical recreation over the course of the year. For each of these 3 sections they commit to one hour a week for 13 weeks and their favourite section for one hour a week for a total of 26 weeks.
Students in the past have started volunteering, taken up a new language, a new instrument, started running, started baking and so much more.
The final part of the Gaisce award is to take part in an overnight outdoor adventure journey. For most, this is the highlight of the Gaisce journey. In TCS we go on a two day adventure through the Wicklow mountains, staying in Knockree hostel overnight.
