Student Council and Student Leadership at Tallaght Community School

Student leadership is a valued and integral part of school life at Tallaght Community School. Guided by our core values of Learning Together, Everyone Matters, and Every Moment Counts, students are encouraged to have a voice, take responsibility, and contribute positively to their school community through a strong and structured student leadership model.

The Student Council

The Student Council at Tallaght Community School is made up of 14 students, with two representatives from each year group. In LCA, one representative is elected from each LCA class. All representatives are democratically elected by their year group, ensuring fair and meaningful representation across the school.

The Student Council acts as the main link between students and school management. It provides a forum where student views, ideas, and concerns can be shared in a constructive and respectful way. Council members meet regularly to discuss issues affecting students and to help shape initiatives that support wellbeing, inclusion, engagement, and whole‑school improvement.

Through their role on the council, students develop key leadership skills such as communication, collaboration, decision‑making, and advocacy. They also learn the importance of representing their peers responsibly and contributing to the wider school community.

Student Leaders

In addition to the Student Council, Tallaght Community School has a strong system of student leaders, with 66 students in total, including two student leaders from each tutor group. These students play an important role in supporting school initiatives and promoting positive behaviour, participation, and school spirit throughout the year.

Student leaders work within sub‑committees, each focusing on a specific area of school life. These sub‑committees liaise closely with and are led by the Student Council, ensuring student leadership is coordinated, purposeful, and inclusive.

The student leadership sub‑committees are:

  1. Wellbeing
  2. Sport and Physical Activity
  3. Green Schools and Sustainability
  4. Equality, Inclusion and Diversity
  5. Communications and Social Media
  6. Irish Language Promotion

These committees provide students with opportunities to lead projects, campaigns, and events that contribute positively to school life and support the learning and wellbeing of the whole school community.

Empowering Student Voice

Tallaght Community School is committed to listening to and valuing student voice. Our Student Council and student leadership structures ensure that students are active partners in school life and decision‑making, helping to foster a culture of respect, responsibility, and inclusion.

Leadership opportunities support students to build confidence, develop important life skills, and take pride in contributing to their school community.
